Gary Marcus grew up in a wealthy family in Scarsdale, New York. His relatives founded national and regional businesses such as Q-tips, Van Heusen Shirts, Lionel Trains, the Bank of United States and the Gilman Paper Company. They also set an example for philanthropy, helping to establish Beth Israel Hospital, and contributing millions to Brandies, Julliard and the Metropolitan Opera.
